Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the human development index on poverty in East Java. The study uses quantitative methods, with simple linear regression analysis using panel data of 266 samples, taken from 38 districts / cities in East Java with a total sample of 7 years (from 2011 to 2017). The data used in this study are secondary data from the Central Statistics Bureau of East Java. As an independent variable in this study is the Human Development Index and the dependent variable is poverty. The results showed that based on statistical tests the Human Development Index proved to significantly influence poverty at a significance level of 5%. The higher the Human Development Index, the poverty rate decreases. The ability of the HDI variable in explaining the poverty variable based on adjusted square reached 0,98%, indicating that the effort to alleviate poverty using the Human Development Index approach is a strategic enough step to be carried out by the East Java regional government.Keyword: Human Development Index, Poverty
